>Let’s Talk Visuals!
And Ei Aoki’s directing really does seem to bring over some essence of the visuals that Ufotable is notable for. The crisp and well defined, realistic yet stylistic look and feel of Re:Creators is quite awesome. The way the hair of the characters look. It has this solid gradient look that is similar to Fate/Zero. Re:Creators also has some impressively well put together action scenes.
>Let’s Talk Characters!
Re:Creators has a very strong and memorable cast. All interesting in their own way. Character design was tackled by Rei Hiroe himself. And while I dont have a clear idea of what his style is since i havent read much of his manga, I do think he absolutely NAILED the look of the show’s characters. Each character that came out of their in-universe anime and manga and games all have designs that look distinct and realistic. The fictional characters in the cast all feel like they could have been a character in a real anime.
>Let’s Talk About Talking and Clever Characterization!
And so we must address the main crticism of Re:Creators earlier rather than later… the exposition. Many a viewer has the potential to fal for the trap and expect Re:Creators do be something of a spectacle. But thismseries is about IDEAS, THEMES, and most importantly STORIES. Sota said it himself, “a story about stories”. So naturally, a show about this stuff will spend a lot of time discussing it.
>Let’s Hear Soundtracks! (And then Orgasm)
Hiroyuki Sawano provides the OST and OP for this series. And it is his best yet. Sawano may not be my favorite composer, but its hard not to consider him one after hearing Layers. Out of every Sawano score i have heard this one is the most evocative and emotional. His OSTs for Attack on Titan, Aldnoah Zero, Kaberneri, and Kill la Kill, while all solid to very good, have a pretty consistent tone of excitement and bombast and badass metal af awesomeness that gets you pumped.
>Let’s Talk Story, Themes, and Ideas!
The social commentary on the consumption of media can be seen in the character arc of Mamika. She is from a very unrealistic kids show that paints the world in a very black and white way. Its very clean, inoffensive and unchallenging. And when Mamika is faced with the harsh realities of pain and suffering, it really says something to me. Meteora’s monologue about how playing the game she is in had changed her perception of the world and made her come to some sort of actualization was a very powerful scene that spoke to me on so many levels as a writer. To see a fictional character grow to understand and appreciate the work of the person who created her is unbelievable.
>Here’s the Conclusion
Re:Creators is a show that I feel I can understand where its coming from. Re:Creators is an intelligent, well written show with passion and wit behind it that I both respect and feel a slight connection to. So far, this has blown every anime of this season out of the water with its kickass OST, great visuals, fascinating ideas, likeable multilayered and charismatic characters, and an interesting story about our imagination colliding with reality in an engaging way that I cannot wait to see the next episode!
