Tokyo is currently experiencing rain showers that seem to disrupt the usual pace of everyone living there to no end. Amidst this seemingly eternal downpour arrives the runaway high school student Hodaka Morishima, who struggles to financially support himself—ending up with a job at a small-time publisher. At the same time, the orphaned Hina Amano also strives to find work to sustain herself and her younger brother. Both fates intertwine when Hodaka attempts to rescue Hina from shady men, deciding to run away together. Subsequently, Hodaka discovers that Hina has a strange yet astounding power: the ability to call out the sun whenever she prays for it. With Tokyo's unusual weather in mind, Hodaka sees the potential of this ability. He suggests that Hina should become a "sunshine girl"—someone who will clear the sky for people when they need it the most. Things begin looking up for them at first. However, it is common knowledge that power always comes with a hefty price...

Encoder's Notes

It’s encoded from ZR’s JPBD remux with some filtering to remove the aliasing and haloing. It’s encoded in x264 because it preserves the quality better. Here’s a comparison with the BDremux so you know how much detail you’re missing out on. Also, the 2ch audio is opus and 5.1ch audio is qAAC.

Now, coming to the fun part: the subtitles. It’s a heavy edit of the official subs. I timed all the lines, edited the dialogue, fixed some errors, styled and localized the script, added memes, puns and replaced all song translations with my own edits of ones from this awesome blog by Green Moriyama

I referenced Lonley Hikikomori subs for a handful of lines and decided not to include their “typesetting”. Too much text on screen which doesn’t blend with the video only makes things more confusing. The signs are translated but they’re not typeset.

The 1080p encode is slightly bigger than usual. Maybe I’ll do a smaller one later. Or maybe not. Or maybe not not. For now I’m encoding the 4k bluray. Yeah, not happening. The sizes are sky high and there’s no real improvement in quality. It actually looks worse than 1080p with ‘enhanced’ (read: messed up) colors. If you really want the best possible quality, get our [Kaizoku] release.

I’ve muxed the final version of my subs with these encodes. If you have an older encode, you can mux the Subtitles, Fonts, Multi-channel audio, etc from this folder. I’ve also added the music video for Grand Escape which was included on the bluray. The subtitles are frame timed to blend with scene changes and what the heck, it looks pretty cool!

Edit: I usually don’t do this but I’ve worked way too hard on this movie to let it slide. I’ve made a comparison of all the currently available relevant encodes so you can see the differences for yourself. Discussions are always welcome, in the comments or on Discord.
